Also, the center hole on a 8mm reel is about 1/4 inch in diameter while the center hole on a Super 8 reel is about 1/2 inch in diameter.

Super 8 with sound

       Super 8 Sound Film Example

Sound film does cost more than silent due to the additional run that must be made to capture the sound in addition to the labor to edit and sync the sound with the video from the film.

We've found Super 8 sound quality to be highly variable and in some cases, very distorted. There are three reasons for this. First, as the film degrades and shrinks it degrades the audio as well. Second, sprocket hole damage causes the audio strip to move which can distort the audio. Third, there was never a standard for putting audio on film. There were different ways to record it and different ways to read it. Because of these issues, about 30-40% of the Super 8 sound we transfer is distorted. You may want to consider this before deciding if you want the sound transferred as well since there is an additional cost to transfer it.

16mm with sound

       16mm Sound Film Example

16mm sound film came in many different varieties. This is just one example. In general, 16mm film with sound will only have sprocket holes on 1 side. The other side carries the sound strip. The sound strip can come in other colors like blue & silver.  Sound film does cost more to transfer than silent film due to the additional run that must be made to capture the sound in addition to the labor to edit and sync the sound with the video from the film.

We've found Super 16 sound quality to be highly variable and in some cases, very distorted. There are three reasons for this. First, as the film degrades and shrinks it degrades the audio as well. Second, sprocket hole damage causes the audio strip to move which can distort the audio. Third, there was never a standard for putting audio on film. There were different ways to record it and different ways to read it. Because of these issues, about 20% of the 16mm sound we transfer is distorted. You may want to consider this before deciding if you want the sound transferred as well since there is an additional cost to transfer it.
