Transferring Your Super 8 Films
Does Super 8 Film Have More Than SD Resolution?
Absolutely! We’ve done about 40 comparisons and super 8 film actually falls between HD (1080) and 2K (1556). The reason most film transfer companies only scan at SD is because it is the cheapest way to do it but you miss out on about 60-70% of the details from the film. If you ever want to convince yourself of that play your SD conversion you got done on VHS or DVD and play your film next to it. You’ll see that you film has a lot more detail than what you have on VHS and DVD. By the way, VHS can only hold 240 lines and DVD is 480 lines. Your super 8 film is around 1200-1300 lines depending on the film type, camera, lens, how well the operator focused the lens, etc. The SD machines that 99% of the companies out there use is a modified projector and camcorder type setup. It costs about $2000-$4000. Our 2K scanners cost about $200,000.
My Super 8 Is So Old Why Would I Need an HD Scan Of The Film?
Let me answer this in a different way. Remember in the late 90’s when digital cameras started coming out? If you bought one like me you realized that the quality was terrible. 35mm Kodak film could hold about 30 Megapixels of detail per picture. Digital cameras started out with 1 Megapixel per picture. 35mm film was capturing 30 times more detail than the first digital cameras. So, even though super 8 film is 40-50 years old, like 35mm film, film holds much more resolution than formats that followed… for decades. Super 8 film holds about 1200-1300 lines of resolution per frame. VHS that came after it holds 240 as does 8mm tape. Hi 8 could hold 400 lines and MiniDV tape 480 lines. HD camcorders started at 720 lines and went up to 1080. Even 25 years after the super 8 film format was dead it still had more detail per frame than the state-of-the-art HD camcorders. Seems crazy but it is 100% true. Because super 8 film is so old most customers think that an SD scan of the film is more than adequate, but it isn’t even close. Today, if you want to get 100% of the details from the film you want to do a 2K (1556) scan.
Can Old Super 8 Film Still Be Scanned Today?
Yes! We are the leading (or highest quality) super 8 film scanning company in the United States. Our scanners are professional sprocket-less machines. This is really important today. Film shrinks over time. Today the sprocket holes on the side are about 1 mm closer than they were 40-50 years ago. On a sprocket-based machine imagine a metal claw coming up to pull the film through and expecting the hole to be where it was originally taken. At the very least it will elongate the hole but in many cases it will tear the film and cause the film to get stuck in the machine damaging it further. So, today the only way to scan old film is by using a professional sprocket-less machine.
Is It Worth Getting My Super 8 Film Scanned At 4K?
No, not in most cases. Super 8 film resolution is between 1080 (HD) and 2K (1556). Our full 4K scan is 3112 lines. So, it is really overkill to scan super 8 film at 4K. But, we do a lot of work for people doing documentaries on old actors, actresses (like Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, Dick Van Dyke, etc) and they don’t want any question about quality and so they will usually do a 4K scan. But for the average person with super 8 film we don’t recommend a 4K scan. A 2K scan will already get 100% of the details from the film.
Who Is The Best Super 8 Film Scanning Company?
Video Conversion Experts is. We are constantly buying new equipment and working on new technology to get the best quality from super 8 film without damaging it in the process. We spend $200,000 on our 2K (1556 line) scanner. In comparison the largest provider of super 8 film conversion (like Walmart and Costco) spend about $2000. We are able to get 100% of the details from the film. Walmart and Costco get about 30-35% of the quality from the film. Also, restoration is becoming a big issue for old super 8 film. Walmart and Costco offer no restoration. Video Conversion Experts offers color & exposure correction, grain removal, scratch and surface damage removal and stabilization. You won’t find anyone else scanning at this resolution and do this much restoration for any price.
